Student Member Workshop Recap: Basic Survival Skills

Last Updated 5/9/2025Posted in Student Member

The Altus Chamber of Commerce recently hosted a hands-on Survival Skills Workshop for our student members, designed to equip the next generation with practical knowledge they can carry into any situation.

During this interactive session, students explored essential techniques for preparing for emergencies—ranging from natural disasters to unexpected life events. The workshop emphasized basic readiness strategies, including how to stay calm under pressure, assess risk, and plan for both short- and long-term needs.

Participants learned several useful knot-tying methods, highlighting their importance in survival settings, such as building shelters, securing equipment, or assisting with rescues. They also got a chance to sample MREs (Meals Ready-to-Eat), offering a realistic glimpse into how food is rationed and consumed during military or field operations.

To round out the day, students were introduced to foundational military-inspired survival tactics—designed to teach quick decision-making, resourcefulness, and adaptability in challenging environments.

Workshops like these are part of our ongoing commitment to help student members grow in confidence, leadership, and real-world readiness. We’re proud to support these future community leaders as they build skills that matter far beyond the classroom.
