Become a “Home Away From Home” for an Airman at Altus Air Force Base. Because of the unique training missions here at Altus, our base is home to the Airmen-in-Training (AiT) program. These young men and women are here for 3-4 months as their initial Air Force assignment fresh out of Basic Military Training and are on their way to coming KC-135 Boom Operators and C-17 Loadmasters. This incredible program is the only one of its kind in the entire U.S. Air Force serving enlisted members. This is your chance to show them the famous hometown hospitality you can only find in Altus, America.
A simple meal with your family can mean the world to an Airman who is away from home, or you may enjoy inviting them to local events as your guest. And of course, there are plenty of opportunities to make them part of your family’s holiday celebrations. These gestures may seem simple to you, but they can be a true blessing to these young Airmen beginning their careers in service to our country. It is the perfect way to give back to those who defend our freedom.
We make every effort to pair students with families that have similar interests, and there are several Airmen just waiting to hear that they have a local family who wants to spend time with them. Many of our Airmen in Training are often here without their own form of transportation, so please let us know if you do not already have access to the base.
Applying to adopt an Airman is easy! All you need is
1. A letter of introduction about you and your family. (See Application Checklist for more details.)
2. A letter of recommendation from someone who knows you.
3. A completed Host Questionnaire to help us match you with a student.
Download the Application Checklist and the Host Questionnaire so you can get started today! Once you have completed those forms, submit them by email to 97TRS.MTL@us.af.mil with “Home Away from Home” in the subject line.
If you have any questions, please email 97TRS.MTL@us.af.mil or contact the Altus Chamber at 482-0210. You can also connect with others in the community who are interested in this program through the 97th TRS AiT Sponsorship Program Facebook page.
