Altus boasts one of the finest public school systems in the state. In addition to Altus High School, the system includes a junior high, a middle school, six elementary schools and a learning center. The high school offers a curriculum designed to prepare students for productive citizenship in a fast-changing world. Students may choose a program of traditional classes, applied classes or advanced-placement classes. Course offering include French, German and Spanish.
Sports offered include baseball, basketball, cross-country track, football, golf, gymnastics, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, track and field, and wrestling.
Other programs include art, vocal and instrumental music, dance, drama, debate and mock trial. Both music departments are recognized as among the best programs in the state. Special education programs are also available for children with mental or physical disabilities. A pre-school for handicapped children is also offered by the Altus Public School system as well as "English as a Second Language" classes for children at all grade levels.

Educational excellence through Christ-centered principles
Altus Christian Academy is a private elementary school emphasizing strong academics in a Christian-based environment. ACA offers pre-kindergarten, beginning with 3-year-olds, and extends through the 5th grade. Plans are in progress to add 6th grade as well.
Altus Christian Academy is a member school with the Association of Christian Schools International. Its extended care program is licensed by the Oklahoma Department of Human Services. Altus Christian is designated by the IRS as a 501(c)3 organization.

WESTERN OKLAHOMA STATE COLLEGE
With a 73-year tradition in academic excellency, options at Western Oklahoma State College are limitless. An emphasis in academic transfer and more than 59 areas of study and technical education programs enables students to earn their Associate in Arts, Associate in Science, or Associate in Applied Science degree. The Associate in Science and the Associate in Arts degrees are designed for successful transfer to senior institutions while the Associate in Applied Science degree prepares students for immediate employment.
Western is constantly building and improving the facilities. The newest facilities include the 48-room student residential housing facility, the Maffry Aviation Center, the W.C. Burris Student Success Center, the Wellness Center, and the Learning Resources and Telecommunications Center. Western also features a 1,600-seat capacity gym, an NCAA six-lane indoor swimming pool, tennis courts, racquetball courts, rodeo arena, baseball field and the Herschal H. Crow Fine Arts Center.
Western Oklahoma State College awards scholarships based on academic achievement, financial need, athletics and fine arts. Western students can participate in over 25 student organizations or intercollegiate sports.

The Southwest Technology Center provides flexible, quality vocational technical training to high school students and adults as well as business and industrial leaders.
The center provides comprehensive full-time training in health science technology, administrative services, aviation and aerospace technology, occupational services, computer information services, electronics technology, automotive technology, construction trades, simulator maintenance technology and licensed practical nursing. Additionally, the center provides business and industry services in such areas as contract bid assistance, adult training and development, small business management training and industry specific training.
Student services include financial aid for post-secondary students and career counseling and assessment. An educational enhancement center is available for those interested.
Professional counselors are available to discuss financial aid programs and career opportunities following completion of training. College credit is available for many of the training programs through cooperative enrollment agreements with Western Oklahoma College.

The Altus Public Library serves the residents of Jackson and Harmon Counties. Residents of other counties may become patrons of the library by paying a $10.00 out of county fee yearly. This fee entitles all members of the immediate family to use the library and its services.
To obtain a library card you must be 18 years of age and present proof of address such as a utility bill, rent receipt, recently dated mail, or a checkbook. Children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian and must sign the library card giving their children permission to use the library.
The Altus Public Library contains over 60,000 volumes as well as audio books, records, videos and cassettes. The card catalog is on computer. We currently have 4 access terminals. There are 4 Internet access terminals available to the public.
